Experience one of the most beautiful walks in the Himalayas.

In 1989 Craig van Hoy summited the worlds third highest mountain Kangchenjunga (catch-chewn-chung-ga) as part of the first American team.  The trek into the Kangchenjunga Base Camp is one of the most beautiful in all of Nepal. Unlike the Mount Everest area, the trek has only been open to hikers since 1990 and is still a very pristine walk. The other unique thing about this trek, is that you follow the river valley to reach the high villages on Pangpema, and base camp. On most treks in Nepal you have to cut across the “grain” of the great Himalayan range meaning you go from ridgeline to river valley and then repeat the process for days to reach the highlands.

Included: Hotels, tours, all ground transportation, domestic flights, porters, guides, food & all group equipment.

Not included: International round-trip air fare and travel expenses United States to Nepal, personal gear, excess baggage charges, airport taxes and Nepal entry visas, satellite telephone air charges, costs incurred as a result of delays or events beyond the control of Go Trek, recommended insurance policies (medical, evacuation and trip cancellation.)

Price: $3,995 includes domestic flights in Nepal

This is the mountain that put Craig Van Hoy literally “on the map” and it is very special every year he returns.  His team included a notable “Who’s Who” of American mountaineering including Lou Whittaker and Ed Viesturs. To mark that unforgettable event, Craig recently announced that Go Trek would lead a “Reunion Journey” back to the 16,500-foot base camp. Don’t miss the chance to join Craig as he recounts the expedition and journey that launched his legendary formal career in mountaineering. Let Craig, along with his Nepali partners, take you in to this pristine wilderness area where there are no crowds and the views are stunning.

A special feature of this adventure has all team members following the river valley trail leading to the remote, high villages on Pangpema, and eventually base camp. This slow, gradual ascent allows for exploration of culture, color and local traditions.  This is a special place, a special route and an emotional journey for Craig every time he returns. Don’t miss as chance to join him on this historic occasion.

Culture & Sightseeing

This is a wonderful trek filled with monasteries, Sherpa culture and the exotic sights and sounds of Kathmandu.

Additional Information

There are two ideal “weather windows” for Nepal. Temperatures are relatively warm through the latter half of March until the first of June. Mornings are bright and clear with the air slowly becoming hazier as the day progresses. The color displays of the rhododendron forests in spring time are spectacular. The fall season, the later half of October to early December, is an ideal time for the best mountain views. Cool and clear crisp air greets the trekker each morning and evening.
